Hema Malini was not ready to do Baghban
‘Baghban’, released in 2003, is counted among the best films of Hema Malini’s career. In the film directed by Ravi Chopra, she played the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s wife, who is forced to live separately from her husband because of her children. But, Hema Malini refused to do this film when she came to know that in this film she has to play the role of a grandmother of four grown-up boys and two children. She was initially not happy with her role in the film, but then her mother persuaded her to do this movie.
Hema Malini was not ready to play the role of a mother of four sons
Hema Malini had revealed this in an interview given to Bharti S Pradhan. She told that she had agreed to do this film on the insistence of her mother, otherwise she had almost rejected this film. Talking about this, Hema Malini said- ‘Before the muhurat of Baghban, BR Chopra ji met me and said that he wanted me to play this role in Baghban. He also told me the story of the film and I think it was his blessing that I was able to perform well in this film. Till date people talk about this film.’

Hema Malini further said- ‘I remember that when Ravi Chopra was narrating the story to me, my mother was also sitting with me. When Ravi left, I said- ‘He is asking me to play the role of the mother of four such big boys. How can I do this?’ Then my mother said, no-no. You must do this role. The story is very good.’

The story of Baghban revolves around an elderly couple who have been married for 40 years and love each other very much. After Amitabh Bachchan’s character retires, the two discuss who they will live with. In such a situation, their four children say that no one can take care of both of them together. Therefore, they will have to live separately with two of their sons in turns. This family drama released in 2003 made the audience cry a lot.
