Why are National Awards given?
The National Film Awards are the most prestigious awards, announced annually to honour the best filmmaking talents across the country. According to the Directorate of Film Festivals, Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the aim of the National Film Awards is to ‘encourage the production of films with aesthetic and technical excellence and social relevance.’ First given in 1954, these awards were known as the State Awards. In those years, only the best films from various regional languages were recognised and rewarded. Awards to actors and technicians working in films were first given in 1967. Nargis was the first actress to win the Best Actress award for her performance in Raat Aur Din. Uttam Kumar won the Best Actor award for Antony Firingee and Chidiyakhana in the same year.
