This film ruled the theaters
2024 has become a year of re-releases for Indian cinema, with many old films releasing in theatres. Many superhit films of superstars like Shahrukh Khan, Chiranjeevi and Vijay were also re-released on the big screen, which attracted a lot of people’s attention. The surprising thing was that the highest grossing film among them was not a big budget hit movie, but a horror film made for Rs. 5 crores, named ‘Tumbbad’. Despite lacking a star-studded cast, this cult classic surpassed the collections of all films after its re-release.
The biggest re-releases of 2024
Sohum Shah’s ‘Tumbbad’, directed by Rahi Anil Barve and Anand Gandhi, took the box office collection and ticket sales in India this year higher than all the re-released films. Now it has become the highest grossing re-release film of 2024 in India. The horror cult classic ‘Tumbbad’ was released in 2018. Made with a budget of Rs 5 crore, this film had earned around Rs 15 crore at the box office at that time. It became a huge hit upon its re-release. In comparison, Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Rockstar’ earned Rs 10.50 crore, Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ earned Rs 2.50 crore and Chiranjeevi’s cult classic ‘Indra’ earned Rs 3.20 crore. Vijay’s ‘Ghilli’ was the only film that seemed to compete at the re-release box office with a collection of Rs 26 crore, but still stands at the second position.
Tumbbad left these films behind in collection
On Saturday, Filmy View had shared ticket sales figures of some of the biggest films re-releasing in India in 2024. This year, six films have sold more than one lakh tickets on their re-release. ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’, which is running in theaters today, has sold more than 1 lakh tickets, while ‘Rockstar’ has sold 3 lakh tickets. Tickets for ‘Gabbar Singh’ and ‘Murari’ have been sold for Rs 2.10 lakh to Rs 2.58 lakh. Vijay’s ‘Ghilli’ is at the second position with 4 lakh tickets, but still far behind ‘Tumbbad”s re-release which sold 10.25 lakh tickets.
