Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan got married in 1973. It has been 51 years since their marriage and even today both of them live together like friends. We are not saying this. Jaya Bachchan herself said this in her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda’s show ‘What the hell Navya’. She told that Amitabh is her best friend and she shares everything with him. But do you know, when Amitabh and Jaya were getting married in 1973, the Pandit had objected? No! Let us tell you the whole story.
In 1989, Jaya Bachchan’s father Tarun Kumar Bhaduri talked about Jaya and Amitabh’s marriage in an article written for the Illustrated Weekly of India. He told that Amitabh had called Jaya’s mother a few days before the wedding and immediately called her to Mumbai. We reached Mumbai and started preparing for the wedding. This marriage was kept secret. A friend of ours lives in Malabar Hills. We arranged the wedding at his house.
He further said, “I am an atheist, but Jaya’s mother wanted Jaya’s marriage to be conducted under the supervision of a Bengali Pandit. Bengali Pandits were not available. When a Bengali Pandit was found with great difficulty, he started opposing Amitabh and Jaya’s marriage. He did not want a Bengali Brahmin (Jaya) to marry a non-Bengali non-Brahmin (Amit). After a lot of trouble, the matter was settled. Amit completed all the rituals without offending anyone. He honestly did everything he was asked to do. The next day, they left for London. On their return, I held a reception in Bhopal and again Amit did what he was asked to do.”
