The film ‘Love Story’ was made in 1981 under the direction of Rahul Rawail. Vijayta Pandit and Kumar Gaurav were seen together in this film. Both of them fell in love on the sets of this film. Their relationship did not last long and turned into a controversy. Years later, Vijayta Pandit spoke openly about her relationship with her first co-star Kumar Gaurav. She discussed in detail her love life, Kumar Gaurav’s broken engagement, betrayal and then his marriage to Sanjay Dutt’s sister. She also clarified that Kumar Gaurav’s engagement with Reema Kapoor was not broken because of her. She also said that Kumar Gaurav was the first love of her life, he was the person who touched her for the first time.
Vijayta Pandit talked about her love life
In an interview with Lehran Retro, Vijayta Pandit revealed how she got extremely close to Kumar Gaurav and how their relationship turned sour. Vijayta said, ‘Bunty (Kumar Gaurav) was the first boy I hugged while shooting for Love Story. You watch any love story, be it Rishi Kapoor-Dimple Kapadia’s ‘Bobby’, Sunny Deol-Amrita Singh’s ‘Betaab’, Sanjay Dutt and Tina Munim’s ‘Rocky’, all these actors fell in love in real life. With such films you have to get into it, feel the romance… That was the first time a boy was touching me, so we both fell in love… Bunty liked me a lot. He used to follow me, holding my hand, dancing… He used to be a very charming boy.’
Rajendra Kumar was against the relationship
She further revealed that Kumar Gaurav’s father was against their relationship and said, ‘But his father and film producer Rajendra Kumar was very upset with our relationship. He used to drink alcohol and tell Bunty that he is his prince and he should marry a princess. He said that he will find a girl from a reputed family for his son. I used to get very scared when I used to hear all this, but Bunty always told him that he loves me. They used to drink together and argue. I used to try to get away from this situation.’
When he got engaged to Reema
She further told how despite being engaged to Raj Kapoor’s daughter, Kumar Gaurav was adamant to marry her and had even ‘sworn’ to marry her. Vijayta told, ‘Rajendra Kumar saw that his son was falling in love with me, so he and Raj Kapoor decided to get Kumar Gaurav and Reema engaged. I also went to that ceremony, I saw that she (Reema) had made Kumar Gaurav wear a very big diamond ring. I told him that it looked very beautiful and then he got angry and said, ‘If you don’t like it then I will throw it away’. I left from there thinking that he is going crazy. Even after the engagement, Bunty used to come to my house, I never went to his house.’
Why did the engagement break?
Vijayta clarified that she had nothing to do with Kumar Gaurav’s broken engagement with Reema. She said, ‘My mother and father were very upset and scared. My father said that he would ask Rajendra Kumar to ensure that his son does not come to meet them now that he is engaged. Bunty told my mother that he will marry only me despite his engagement. He told her that it is impossible and then he swore that he will marry only me and then I don’t know what happened. I found out that he was having an affair with Namrata Dutt. So he broke his engagement with Reema and I had no hand in that.’

Kumar Gaurav and Vijayta worked together in the film ‘Love Story’. The film was a success and both became stars overnight. Their relationship also started with this film. However, while Vijayta married late musician Adesh Srivastava and had two children, Kumar Gaurav married Namrata, Sanjay Dutt’s sister and daughter of film legends Nargis and Sunil Dutt.
