The full name of RD Burman was Rahul Dev Burman. He was born on 27 June 1939 in Kolkata. His father Sachin Dev Burman was a English film composer and singer and mother Meena Devi was a lyricist. His childhood nickname was Tablu, but later everyone started calling him Pancham Da. He composed his first song at the age of 17.
The first meeting took place in Darjeeling
Very few people know that RD Burman’s first wife was Rita Patel. Both of them met in Darjeeling. Rita was a fan of RD Burman and had bet her friends that she would go on a film date with the singer.
The relationship lasted only five years
After this both fell in love and then got married in 1966. But due to mutual differences, this relationship could not last long. After five years of marriage, both of them got divorced in the year 1971. RD Burman composed the hit song ‘Musafir Hoon Yaaro…’ (song from the 1972 film Parichay) when he was in a hotel after a separation.
Second marriage with Asha Bhosle
RD Burman married for the second time in 1980, to well-known singer Asha Bhosle. They recorded many hit songs together and also performed many live shows. However, RD Burman did not stay with Asha Bhosle till the end of his life. He had to face financial problems.
Mother died after 13 years of death
His mother Meera died in the year 2007, 13 years after RD Burman’s death. She was already suffering from Alzheimer’s before her son’s death. He was taken to an old age home just before his death. After a dispute over this, she went back to her son’s house.
