Anupama Chopra and Akshay Rathi.
In India TV’s special podcast ‘The Film Hasle’, film critic and film Critics Guild Chairperson Anupama Chopra explained the concept of Pan India films and diversification of South Indian films. When asked about the diversity in cinema, Anupama said that she started watching cinema beyond Bollywood and Hollywood during Cannes and Mami Film Festival. He further said that from print journalism to digital, he has seen everything in entertainment and now the new rise of ‘South’s content’ is equally attractive.
Every cinema has its own identity
Talking deeply on the subject, Akshay Rathi said that it is the responsibility of entertainment journalists to diversify these various film industries and identify them with their real names. On this, Anupama Chopra reacted and said, ‘I completely agree with this! We cannot just say South Indian films because the fictional name ‘Dakshin’ consists of four mainstream film industry. Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema which have their own culture, actor, language, filmmakers and traditions. Saying them just one reflects ignorance and deficiency and even if the audience calls it so, journalists should never do so, ‘Anupama replied.
Some films do not need critics
Talking further on the matter, Anupama Chopra said that some films have their own distinct identity and no film critic is required to talk about them. He said, “For example Pushpa 2, what would I say about the film that will disrupt its tremendous earnings and the same applies to a better film.” Anupama Chopra further said on The Film Hasal, ‘As a reviewer I think it is my duty to talk about the small budget films that have possibilities and who need people’s opinion, but after saying that, it may be that it affects only three people and I am not happy with it, I am happy with it.
