When Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Jaya Bachchan and Hema Malini starrer ‘Sholay’ was released, the film’s director Ramesh Sippy and writer duo Salim-Javed got tensed after seeing its condition.

Ramesh Sippy had revealed this secret on the set of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. In the 15th season of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, he had revealed a truth which even the film’s actress Hema Malini was unaware of. Hema Malini had also reached the set of KBC along with Ramesh Sippy, where both of them were talking about Sholay. She told that when Sholay was released, Hema was shooting for the film ‘Rajkamal’. Ramesh Sippy had come to meet her during the shooting of this film.
When the film did not get positive response
When Hema asked Ramesh Sippy about the opening of ‘Sholay’, he shook his head in ‘no’. Ramesh Sippy further told Hema Malini that the opening of the film has been very bad. The film is not getting any special response from the people. Hema also became disappointed after knowing about this. After this, Amitabh Bachchan further told the audience about this whole story.
Ramesh Sippy, Salim-Javed reached Amitabh Bachchan’s house
Amitabh says- Now we will tell you the story further. Ramesh Sippy ji came to our house with Salim and Javed ji. We were sitting together, they thought that people might not like the script of Jaya Bachchan, who played a widow in the film, getting married again. In such a situation, it was planned that a little change should be made in the script of the film and Amitabh Bachchan’s character should be revived. The team was also preparing to shoot a new scene on Saturday. It was decided that the film should be removed from the theatres on Sunday.
Sholay became a cult classic
All the things were finalised when Ramesh Sippy stood up and said that if the film is to be liked then it has been just one day, we should wait for two days and see the response of the audience. Everyone agreed to this decision of Ramesh Sippy and then as soon as Sunday came, the fate of the film changed and it created a new history. There was only talk of ‘Sholay’ everywhere in the whole country. By Monday, there was a sudden jump in the earnings of the film and ‘Sholay’ became a cult classic of Hindi cinema.
