Kabir Khan and Ranveer Singh.
What was Kapil Dev’s Bhagidari
’83 is a true story based film, which is about 14 great players of the country’s crazy country. Kabir Khan said, ‘People know everything about these great players. For example, there are 20 to 25 percent of people in this country who know everything about these great players, how Kapil Dev used to go, how he used to talk, people know everything, everything. So when I got the responsibility of rebuilding the most prestigious game moment in our history, I thought, if we did anything wrong, we will be trolled badly. Therefore, we took two, three decisions. The first is that the lookalal competition will end the film. Because whatever we do, we can never get closer to originality. Therefore, I said the same to Ranveer. We will try to get closer to Kapil Dev, but will not copy him. We worked like this. ‘
Ranveer spent 14 days with Kapil Dev
Kabir Khan further said, ‘We went to spend as much time as possible with Kapil Dev. We stayed with them technically. Ranveer stayed at his house for 14 days. We told them that we are like a fly on the wall and you do your work, but after a time he said, ‘Ranveer cannot be like a fly on the wall. All my meetings and everything will eventually be about it. ‘ But we made determination and it really helped us, it was surprising to be able to achieve that kind of access. Later, what we did was that we put our entire script in front of him and we asked Kapil Dev to read it in his style. And Ranveer was like a sponge. He assimilated whatever he saw.
Kabir Khan further explains, ‘Apart from this he is a kind of method actor. He is a person who likes to go through a process. So for six months, he used to speak and walk only like Kapil Dev. And when the film was over, Deepika Padukone told me that thank God! Eventually I got Ranveer back because I felt that I have been living with Kapil for a year. I am not calling it in a showy manner because it was my film, but? I would say that 83 is Ranveer’s best performance, because it was very difficult to maintain that acting. To be honest, the way of talking to Kapil Dev was unique. But it is commendable to present it correctly throughout the film. I just told him that I will keep my eyes and ears open and only when the note goes out from the top, I will tell you and then I will pull back, but thankfully I never had to do it. He himself did everything. And the same happened.’
Shooting 83 with real veterans
In this episode, Kabir Khan says, ‘It was very good for us that all the people of the 83 team were with us, imagine whether Kapil Dev came for training or bowled like him or Jimmy Amarnath came to give lessons. It was a great process for me, and I still say the same today. That process of 83 has been the most spectacular process of my life so far, because it is a prestigious story and then, that team! Now such a team is not formed. For example, we all know what kind of pressure comes through a biopic for a person. Here, there are 14 prestigious people. Like, I know, people sit during editing, people change their scripts, and stories of life. But with Kapil sir, this did not happen to us. He gave us the story and he said, ‘We will see it at the premiere now’. In my mind, I thought, no, this is not going to happen. He is going to come back to editing and everyone else, but no, I was wrong. He all came as a team at the premiere and watched the film for the first time. And again! This is why they no longer make such people.
When Clive Lloyd came on the set of 83
Kabir Khan shared an interesting story and said, ‘I often say that 83 received the blessings of the gods of cricket. I remember the shooting of the 83 climax, where the cup was being given to Ranveer and we kept it in the last schedule very cleverly because we wanted the actor to get the right feeling to fight for the World Cup and then to go through training to lift the trophy. The last shooting was also being done in Lord’s balcony, where all this happened. I heard the grumbling around and then came inside the Clive Lloyd. The captains of the West Indies team came in, sitting next to me and what do I react to it? So before starting shooting, I asked him, ‘Do you want to get a little closer?’ He looked at me with a senseless manner and said, ‘You want me to see while giving a cup for the second time?’ With that satire, we shot the scene. ‘
When Ranveer cries like children
Kabir finally said, ‘Just before playing the camera for the last scene, I remember that two women from Lord’s came inside with some covered clothes under the velvet. Later, he removed the cloth, was a real trophy and he said, ‘We felt that you would like to shoot with the real trophy,’ and at the same moment, our hair stood up. Later, I picked up the trophy. I gave it to Ranveer, I sat back and said action. Then we took the shot and as soon as I said ‘cut’, he just put that thing down, Ranveer broke and started crying like a child. Then, finally, the entire team started crying because it was also the end of the four -month shooting journey for us. We were standing at that place, holding the real cup, wearing clothes just like those. It was a very emotional moment, and all the boys were saying, ‘This is what we live. Films will come and go, but the moments we live. ‘ The emotional core of the film was important to me. These cricketers, who no one believed, was written as the world’s worst one day international team, was the most obstacles against them and yet what they did, so I think the audience did the same.
