Balraj Sahni was born on 1 May 1913 in Rawalpindi (present -day Pakistan). Balraj Sahni, known for his powerful and influential acting, emerged as a prominent person in the golden age of Indian cinema. Balraj Sahni initially made his career in civil service but later got his true identity in acting. Sahni left the Left Cultural Organization Indian People’s Theater Association (IPTA), where he enhanced his skills and passion for acting. His association with IPTA led to his journey in the theater. Balraj Sahni made his film debut in 1946 with the film ‘Insaaf’ but received widespread identity and praise for his role in the film ‘Do Beha Zameen’ (1953) directed by Bimal Roy. The role of Shambhu Mahato, a poor farmer struggling to save his land, demonstrated his acting skills and received praise. The film won the International Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1954.
Part of the golden phase of cinema
The 1950s and 1960s are called the golden phase of cinema. Meanwhile, Balraj Sahni acted in memorable films in films like ‘Kabuliwala’ (1961), ‘Samay’ (1965) and ‘Neil Kamal’ (1968). Padma Shri award honored
Apart from his acting career, Balraj Sahni was also a famous writer and wrote several books including his autobiography ‘Meri Film Autobiography’. Balraj Sahni’s contribution to Indian cinema was recognized not only within the industry but also by the government. He was awarded the Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards of India in 1969.

Balraj Sahni has been one of the few artists who also worked for India’s independence. Balraj Sahni fought against the British with Mahatma Gandhi. Not only this, at the behest of Mahatma Gandhi, Balraj Sahni went to London and also worked in BBC and returned to India. Balraj Sahni also had to go to jail during his career.
