The 2018 dark comedy crime thriller ‘Andhadhun’ directed by Sriram Raghavan is considered one of the best films made in Indian cinema. The film had many ups and downs and a shocking climax, which kept the audience glued to their seats till the end. Every twist of the film also surprised people. Andhadhun starred Ayushmann Khurrana and Tabu in the lead roles. Ayushmann played the role of Akash, who pretends to be a blind piano player and gets himself embroiled in the murder of a former actor, who is killed by his wife Simi (Tabu) along with her boyfriend. Radhika Apte, Anil Dhawan, Zakir Hussain, Ashwini Kalsekar and Manav Vij have played important roles in this film.
The film made bumper earnings worldwide
Made at a budget of just Rs 32 crore, ‘Andhadhun’ grossed Rs 106 crore worldwide upon its release in October 2018. In April 2019, the crime thriller was released in China as ‘Piano Player’ and earned Rs 334 crore, taking the film’s worldwide gross to Rs 440 crore. Directed by Sriram Raghavan, the film is one of Bollywood’s highest grossing films.
Before Ayushmann Khurrana, this actor was offered the film
Before Ayushmann Khurrana, Sriram Raghavan had offered Andhadhun to Anil Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan Kapoor. In the year 2021, Harshvardhan Kapoor himself revealed on Instagram how he lost the film. When a netizen asked him, ‘Do you regret leaving Andhadhun? What was the reason you didn’t do the film?’ Harsh replied, ‘This is a misconception. I actually said yes as soon as I heard about the film. But Bhavesh Joshi got delayed and my dates didn’t work out, so I lost the film.’
The film won three National Awards
After impressing audiences and critics around the world, ‘Andhadhun’ won three National Film Awards. National Film Awards went to Sriram Raghavan for Best Hindi Feature Film, Ayushmann Khurrana for Best Actor and Sriram Raghavan, Arijit Biswas, Pooja Ladha Surti, Yogesh Chandekar and Hemant Rao for Best Screenplay.
Remakes made in three languages
‘Andhadhun’ has also been remade thrice in South Indian languages. Its Telugu remake ‘Maestro’ starring Nithin and Tamannaah Bhatia and Malayalam remake ‘Bhramam’ starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mamta Mohandas were OTT releases on Disney+ Hotstar and Prime Video in the year 2021. Tamil remake ‘Andhagan’ starring Prashanth and Simran releases in theatres this Friday, August 9, 2024
