Nawazuddin said that after enrolling the National School of Drama, he moved to Mumbai, but it took him about a month to get into the dream city. He told, ‘So I studied at the National School of Drama and then went where everyone who dreams of acting goes – Bombay … My first belief about Bombay was how fast everything is here. It took me a month to walk with this fast pace life, I felt that I would never be able to match its speed. ‘
Used to live like this
Nawazuddin comes from a farmer family and was a guide to his eight siblings. He said that he often had to borrow money from friends to stay in Mumbai. He said, ‘My family was not poor, but financially I was not strong and I could not ask for money from home. I used to borrow money from my friends, saying that I would return them in 2 days. Two days later I would borrow money from someone else and return the money to the first one. I lived in a flat with four other people. All this was to live life. He further said, ‘I did strange things – sometimes as a watchman, sometimes to sell coriander. I also organized acting seminars. I went for about 100 auditions and accepted every role in me, no matter how small it is. It took me 12 years to get ‘success’. It was not easy – the struggle was not beautiful, it was just that; a struggle.’
