Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandana starrer film Chhava is scheduled to release on 14 February. Recently, the trailer of the film was released. This trailer has seen controversy over Vicky Kaushal’s dance moves. Now this dispute is getting deeper. In this controversy, Maharana Pratap’s descendant and former Rajya Sabha MP Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati said on Friday that historians should be shown before release to confirm the historical facts of the film Chhava. The film is based on the Maratha warrior-Raja Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The comments of the descendants of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, former MP’s comments came amid opposition from some sections, who objected to a dance scene in the film. It includes actors Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandana, who are playing the roles of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Maharani Yesubai respectively.

Controversy over this dance move

The trailer of the film released earlier this week has a sequence in which Vicky and Rashmika are seen dancing with the traditional musical instruments ‘Lezim’ associated with the cultural heritage of Maharashtra. Regarding this, Sambhajiraj Chhatrapati said that it is commendable that the film throws light on the life and heroic reign of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Director Laxman Utekar and his team showed me the trailer of the film. I told him that I would like to watch the entire film before release. I also offered to connect them. ‘ Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati said, “This important story will be presented authentically to the audience around the world, to ensure that historians will be asked to remove impurities.” However, filmmakers have not yet interacted with historians. While this is an important part of our cultural heritage, it is necessary to discuss whether such cinematic freedom is in line with the dignity and historical depiction of Sambhaji Maharaj. Historians and experts should consult the suitability of this illustration.

People protested

Earlier, some Maratha organizations staged a protest at the historic Lal Mahal in Pune. One of the protesters said, ‘We object to the dance sequence in which Sambhaji Maharaj and Rani Yesubai are shown dancing after the coronation. Filmmakers should show the film to historians and it should be released only after getting their green signal.
