Aishwarya’s saree was changed at the last moment.
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for his brilliant films. The artist’s excellent costumes and luxurious sets are the hallmark of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The filmmaker had given one of the best climaxes in the history of Bollywood with ‘Devdas’. The climax of Devdas seems less impressive the more times it is watched. Paro (Aishwarya Rai), suffering from the pain of Devdas, is running in the corridor of her mansion in the hope of getting a glimpse of her dying lover Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan), even after her pallu catches fire.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali changed his mind before the climax
No matter how grand this scene is, you will be surprised to know that Sanjay Leela Bhansali made a major change in the scene just one night before filming it. Devdas’ costume designer Neeta Lulla revealed that Sanjay Leela Bhansali suddenly called her and asked her if we could change Aishwarya’s saree which she was going to wear in the climax. She needed a 15 meter long saree for the climax scene, that too within 12 hours.
The story behind the 15 meter long silk saree
While talking to YouTube channel Wiping Out The Norm, she told me, ‘I visualised her (Paro) running with her pallu on fire and I needed a 15-metre long silk saree for this scene. I would need two such sarees, so that if one saree burns, we have another one.’
Aishwarya’s saree was ready in 6 hours
Neeta Lulla further said- ‘All this was happening in Goregaon Studio. At that time we did not have mobiles, we only had pagers. In front of me, she called Aishwarya Rai and Kirron Kher to ask if they had two such puja sarees. All this time, I kept asking him if I could go. They soon realized that no one had it. At this time it was 10:30 at night. Sanjay asked me if he could shoot the next day. I said, ‘Sure’ and left the studio.
