In 26 AD, Prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) is a wealthy merchant in Jerusalem. His childhood friend Messala (Stephen Boyd), now a military tribune, arrives at the Roman garrison as the new commanding officer. Ben-Hur and Messala are overjoyed to be reunited after years, but politics drives them apart, with Messala believing in the glory of Rome and its imperial power, while Ben has devoted himself to his faith and the Jewish people. Messala asks Ben-Hur to name Jews who criticize the Roman government. Ben-Hur advises his countrymen against rebellion, but refuses to name them, and the two angrily separate. After this, something happens to Ben-Hur that once again he encounters Messala. Messala gets him punished and Ben-Hur later swears revenge.
