Can a person with diabetes fast
Karva Chauth is one of the most important fasts of India. Married women observe this fast for the long life and prosperity of their husbands. Water is not drunk during this fast. After fasting for the whole day without drinking water, women break this fast by worshiping the moon in the evening and drinking water from the husband’s hand. But if a woman is suffering from a disease like diabetes then she should not observe this fast. This fast can become a problem for women’s health due to not eating or drinking anything throughout the day.
What should not be done during Karva Chauth fast in diabetes?
Although fasting detoxifies the body, which is beneficial for health, but during Karva Chauth, doctors advise women suffering from diabetes not to observe this fast. Actually, this fast ends only when the moon rises. That means this fast has to be observed for 12 to 15 hours without drinking water. Fasting without water for such a long time can lead to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Additionally, not drinking water for a long time can lead to dehydration, dyselectrolytemia (imbalance in the required amount of electrolytes like calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium in the blood) and hypotension, which can worsen health. But even after this, if you are still observing this fast, then you must keep these few things in mind.
Diabetic patients should keep these things in mind while fasting:
Eat protein and fiber rich foods in Sargi: If you are fasting, then include fiber and protein rich foods in Sargi. This will provide energy throughout the day during fasting and due to the protein, you will feel full for a long time.
Do not keep waterless fast: Karva Chauth is a waterless fast, that is, you do not have to drink water on this day, but if you are a diabetes patient, then do not keep waterless fast even by mistake. Keep drinking water to keep yourself hydrated.
Be sure to take your medicine: Even if you are fasting, do not skip your medicine. You can take medicines during morning sargi or even if there is a sugar spike during fasting.
Consume fruits also: Remember that if life is there, then the fast can be observed by eating fruits also. During this period, do not eat fruits with high glycemic index.
Do not eat fried food immediately after the fast: Avoid eating fried food immediately after breaking the fast. This may cause your blood glucose to spike. First drink water or drink so that the body is hydrated.
