New Delhi, November 20 (IANS). Due to poor air quality in the national capital, cases of dry eyes, irritation and allergy problems, also known as allergic conjunctivitis, are increasing rapidly. Experts have described this pollution as a serious threat to the eyes.
Delhi’s air quality remained in the “severe” category on Wednesday morning, with the average air quality index (AQI) at 427 at 10 am, making it India’s most polluted city, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data.
Dr Rohit Saxena, professor of ophthalmology, RP Center for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS New Delhi, told IANS: “Pollution poses a serious threat to our eyes, especially the conjunctiva and cornea. . Microparticles present in polluted environments can affect the surface of the eyes. There is a risk of allergy due to this.
“This is of particular concern for children and adults who already experience dry eyes or allergies, as exposure to poor air quality can worsen these conditions,” she said. “
On Wednesday morning, about 12 of the 38 air quality monitoring stations in Delhi recorded an AQI of 450 or more. Environment Minister Gopal Rai has directed the Delhi government to allow half the employees to work from home.
Recent research conducted by researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus has shown that people living in areas exposed to PM10 may have twice the risk of developing eye infections.
Research has shown that double the number of patients suffering from eye problems including cornea, conjunctiva and eyelids are turning to doctors due to exposure to particles produced by air pollution.
Air pollution can affect eye health to a great extent, causing eye problems and irritation. Polluted air contains particles, dust and pollutants that can cause eye irritation.
Saxena said that frequent rubbing of the eyes can weaken the cornea over time and lead to conditions like keratoconus. This is a condition in which the cornea becomes thin and bulges into a cone shape, which can impair vision.
Its common symptoms include itching, watering, burning, redness and general pain.
Dr Smriti Goyal, Ophthalmic Surgery Consultant, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Patparganj, told IANS: “In severe cases, air pollution can cause pain or blurred vision, which may require immediate treatment.
Experts have suggested avoiding taking the medicine without doctor’s advice.
“Use lubricating drops to keep the eyes moisturized and apply cool compresses to relieve irritation,” Goyal said. Wear glasses or sunglasses to protect your eyes from dust and pollution. Anti allergic eye drops and timely treatment are essential for allergy sufferers. These measures can help protect your eyes from pollution related problems.
Pollution is not just a respiratory problem. It has harmful effects on the entire body, including eye health. Experts have issued advice to people saying that they should avoid going out when pollution is at its peak.
