Artificial Intelligence may also be able to detect Parkinson's disease

New Delhi, November 21 (IANS). A research has revealed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) based algorithm can recognize subtle changes in a person’s voice. Along with this, it is also capable of detecting Parkinson’s disease. It may also serve as a tool to detect neurodegenerative diseases.

The disease currently affects more than 8.5 million people. The incidence of Parkinson’s has doubled over the past 25 years and now causes at least 330,000 deaths each year worldwide.

However, according to researchers in Iraq and Australia who reviewed advances in AI techniques for detecting Parkinson’s disease, traditional methods of detecting the disease are often complex and slow, delaying early detection.

The paper, presented at the Fifth Scientific Conference for Electrical Engineering Technology Research in Baghdad, showed that all evidence suggests that an AI-powered voice detection device could revolutionize life-threatening diseases like Parkinson’s by providing early detection.

Voice changes are often the first sign of the fastest growing neurological disease in the world.

Ali al-Naji, a medical instrumentation engineer at the Middle Technical University in Baghdad, said, “Voice changes are an early sign of Parkinson’s disease. In this dangerous disease, the first change that occurs in the patient’s voice is due to less control over the muscles. With the onset of problems, a change in the rhythm of the patient is seen.

Further said that AI model may be able to detect this disease.

Researchers said that although there is no cure for Parkinson’s, the quality of life can be improved by detecting it early.

“In addition to early detection, artificial intelligence can also help in monitoring patients, reducing the need for patients to visit their doctors in person,” Al-Naji said.
