Thalassemia still has a lot of trouble for children and their families in India even today, where its number of cases is the highest in the world. Thalassemia is a disease related to children about which people have very little knowledge. Every year in India, 10 thousand to 12 thousand children are victims of this disease. In such a situation, ‘World Thalassemia Day’ is celebrated on 8 May every year to spread awareness about this disease.

In Thalassemia, the level of hemoglobin in the body starts decreasing. Due to this, there is gradually there is a lack of blood in the body and the child starts becoming helpless to walk. In Max Super Specialty Hospital, Hemeto-Eunkology, Director of BMT, Dr. Isha Kaul is telling what is Thalassemia? What is its symptoms and what to do to protect?

What is Thalassemia?

Thalassemia is a genetic disease related to blood, due to which a small amount of hemoglobin is formed in the body. This can cause other serious problems related to anemia, fatigue and health. Stem cell transplant can potentially treat patients suffering from Thalassemia, in which the blood -forming cells in their body are replaced by healthy cells of a donor.

Symptoms of Thalassemia:

Excessive fatigue weakening

How to prevent Thalassemia?

Blood transfusion is a temporary solution to this, but stem cell transplant is the only way to correct it completely. The siblings of many patients are also not their matching donors, so transplant is the only support of their lives with the help of unrelated donor (mUD) in such cases. However, finding a matching donor from millions is the biggest challenge.

Get these tests done in Thalassemia:

Complete Blood Count (CBC): Red bloods measures the amount and quality of blood cells.
