New Delhi, 23 February (IANS). Scientists have warned that aromatic compounds emanating from fragmented wax melts can make harmful particles by consisting of ozone inside the house. These particles can be harmful to health.
This study proves wrong that the wax melts with fragrance are more secure than the burning candles. Earlier researches have found that aromatic wax melts, more quantity of aromatic compounds leave in the air than common candles.
According to research, when the wax melts are heated, its surface spreads more and exceeds more fragrance, causing volatile organic compounds such as hydrocarbons. In this fragrance, this information is given in a study published in ACS’s ‘Environmental Sciences and Technology Patra’.
These chemicals can form very small particles together with other elements present in the air, which can affect health by taking through breath. Scientists knew this in advance, but it was not clear whether such particles could be formed by the use of wax melt.
Therefore, researchers at Purdue University of America conducted an experiment to understand this process. He tested 15 different types of wax melts at a model house.
First, he measured the level of air pollution inside the house, then heated the wax melts for about 2 hours. During this time, air samples were taken from a few meters away. Researchers found that there were very small particles of 1 to 100 nanometer size in the air, whose volume was similar to the particles produced by the burning of traditional candles.
According to scientists, these microscopic particles are so small that they can reach blood flow through the respiratory system, which can increase health risk. Research also found that the major VOCS, which emerged from wax melts, contains elements called Turpin, which makes a sticky compound consisting of ozone. These compounds gather in the air and turn into nano particles.
However, when the wax melt without a fragrance was heated, neither the torpin was emitted nor a nanokana. This shows that aromatic elements only contribute to the manufacture of these nanops.
Scientists say that more research is needed to understand the effects of nanops made from wax melts.
