Health News Desk, ‘Tobacco is harmful to health and can cause cancer.’ You will find this line on every cigarette packet. But even after this, people’s smoking does not reduce. Till now you must have heard that only those who smoke get cancer… but have you ever heard that people who live with smokers also get cancer. One such case was in the news, that of Nalini of Hyderabad. Who got cancer due to her husband’s addiction to cigarettes. Let us tell you how close you get to death due to the other person’s smoking.
What is the case of Nalini of Hyderabad?
According to a news published in BBC, a woman named Nalini Satyanarayan lives in Hyderabad. In the year 2010, when she had health problems and got herself tested, it was found that she had cancer. However, she had never consumed tobacco in her life. Now the question arises that how did this happen. In her interview to BBC, Nalini tells that she has been married for more than 33 years. Her husband is a chain smoker, due to which she smokes cigarettes every day even if she does not want to. Understand it simply like this that if you are with someone who smokes cigarettes while being around you, then the smoke released by him goes into your lungs as well and then you become a victim of cancer even without smoking cigarettes.
How many people lose their lives like this?
According to a report of the World Health Organization, about 80 lakh people die of cancer every year due to tobacco consumption. In this, the number of people who die indirectly due to tobacco consumption is 12 lakh. That is, these people lose their lives only because they live with cigarette smokers. On the other hand, if we talk about India, according to the WHO report, the number of people dying due to tobacco consumption here every year is more than 13.5 lakh. That is, now you have to understand that even if you do not smoke, but if someone around you is smoking cigarettes, then he is taking you closer to death.
People are avoiding tobacco
According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), people around the world are now becoming aware of the dangers of tobacco. This is the reason that the number of tobacco users has decreased compared to earlier. If we compare the year 2000 to 2020, the number of tobacco users has decreased significantly. For example, in the year 2000, about 32 percent of people above the age of 15 used tobacco. Whereas, in the year 2020, this number decreased to 20 percent.
Talking about men and women, in the year 2000, while 49 percent men and 37 percent women used tobacco, in the year 2020 this number decreased to 16 percent and 8 percent. However, even after this, every year millions of people lose their lives due to tobacco consumption. At the same time, its effect is seen most on children. According to a WHO report, every year about 65 thousand children lose their lives due to passive smoking.
