Health News Desk, Oversleeping is a big problem these days not only in children but also in the new generation. Sleep needs can vary from person to person, but in general, experts recommend that healthy adults get an average of 7 to 9 hours of shuteye per night. If you regularly need more than 8 or 9 hours of sleep per night to feel rested, it may be a sign of an underlying problem but sleeping more than 9 hours is very dangerous and can even result in death.
Death: According to reports, people who sleep more than 9 hours a night have a significantly higher mortality rate than people who sleep seven to eight hours a night. Sleeping too much leads to various health problems that directly affect your body and increase the chances of dying.
Weight gain: One of the most common effects of oversleeping is weight gain. A recent study showed that people who sleep nine or 10 hours each night are 21% more likely to become obese over a six-year period than those who sleep between seven and eight hours.
Body pain: Oversleeping leads to various problems related to body pain. There was a time when doctors would tell people suffering from back pain to head straight to bed. But those days are long gone. You may also not need to cut back on your regular exercise program when you are experiencing back pain.
Depression: You may be shocked to hear this, but not just undersleeping but oversleeping is also considered a potential symptom of depression. While many people with depression report insomnia, about 15% report oversleeping. A recent twin study also found that sleeping too little or too much increased the genetic heritability of depressive symptoms compared to normal sleepers.
Diabetes: A study claims that people who sleep more than 9 hours a night are at a higher risk of developing diabetes. This probably stems from the fact that people who sleep more have more hours of physical inactivity which can lead to increased glucose levels that trigger diabetes.
