New Delhi, May 27 (IANS). Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned ‘Sugar Board’ in schools in the 122nd episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’. Describing CBSE’s unique initiative, he called it a positive effort for children. After getting praise from PM Modi, now the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed to install ‘sugar boards’ in all schools. On this, health experts say that this is a very important step, which will promote people all over the world towards healthy food.
CBSE has directed to install ‘sugar boards’ in more than 24,000 schools across India. These boards will have the necessary information, such as how much sugar should be eaten in a day, how much sugar is in normal things, better choice of healthy food etc.
Dr. Naval Vikram, Medicine Professor of AIIMS, New Delhi, spoke to IANS regarding ‘Sugar Boards’. He said that this initiative is to teach children how harmful food can be for them, which can cause diseases like obesity and type-2 diabetes in childhood. When the children will be told how much sugar should be eaten in a day and how much sugar is there in food and drink, they will be more conscious.
The doctor said, “If workshops are done in schools along with this initiative and parents are also included, then it will be more effective. It is more effective at the right time that is very important about children’s health. This initiative is in line with the targets related to nutritional nutrition. Earlier, the first type-2 diabetes used to be only older and old. But now it is also growing rapidly in children.”
In a letter to the school principals, CBSE said that in the last 10 years, there is a big reason for the risk of increasing obesity and diabetes in children – more sugar food. It is easily available in schools like snacks, toffee, chocolate, biscuits in schools. Therefore it is important that the school pay attention to this.
At the same time, pediatrician Dr. Arun Gupta told IANS, “I would say that this step is good, but to reduce the wrong things in terms of health, more will have to be done. Just as if a warning should be written on those things and the products that contain more fat, salt and sugar (HFSS), should be banned. Especially in schools, the canteen should be made completely HFS -free.
Dr. Harsh Mahajan, Chairman of FICCI Health Services Committee, described this step as necessary. He said that this initiative has been taken at the right time and it was very much needed so that children’s health could improve. Now even in very young children, such diseases have started occurring which were usually done to big people. But the matter of concern is that many times these diseases are not known quickly and by the time it is known, the body has been very damaged, which is difficult to cure. Therefore, keep doing some important tests to understand the health of children.
