New Delhi, October 27 (IANS). The Central Government is going to start “BRIC-National Agri-Food Bio Manufacturing Institute” (BRIC-NABI) in Mohali, Punjab. It aims to enhance India’s capacity in agricultural biotechnology and bioprocessing.
The new institute will be inaugurated on October 28 and will primarily focus on developing high-yielding crops. Also, it will work on sustainable bio manufacturing technologies and creating value added products from agricultural resources.
The Ministry of Science and Technology said, “It aims to make India a leader in sustainable agri-food solutions by fostering new startups along with large-scale production facilities. This institute will support the vision of ‘Developed India’, with self-reliance , including job creation and promoting sustainable economic growth in the agri-food sector.”
This institute will work on the goals of doubling farmers’ income and government campaigns like “Make in India”. This will include research on genetic modification, metabolic pathways and biomanufacturing to develop practical solutions for the Indian agricultural sector.
Under this, things like biofertilizers, biopesticides, and processed food ingredients will be developed, which will help in sustainable farming, increasing crop production, and creating new sources of revenue for farmers.
Additionally, to promote technology transfer, commercialization and outreach, the institute will partner with international organizations and industries.
“Bionest BRIC-Nabi Incubation Centre” will also be inaugurated on Monday, which will play an important role in bridging the gap between research and industry. It aims to promote entrepreneurship and innovation in the agriculture and bioprocessing sectors.
The center will support local youth, women and farmers and help them access research, development, mentoring and marketing to take their innovations to scale.
