A statement issued by the Vatican said that “Pope Francis’ Easter on Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, died at his residence in Vatican’s Kasa Santa Marta. According to reports, he was suffering from lung infection and he was a double pneumonia (what is double pneumonia). Why does it happen?
What is double pneumonia?
Double pneumonia means both lung infections, called bilateral pneumonia in medical language. This is a serious condition that is seen more in children and the elderly. According to Swami Ramdev, when phlegm starts in the lungs and if he does not come out, then it is called double pneumonia.
Symptoms of double pneumonia:
Double pneumonia includes symptoms such as high fever, persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pain and fatigue. When a person suffers from double pneumonia, oxygen levels in his body may decrease. Also, a person has trouble breathing every day and feels tired most of the time. Confusion also arises due to pneumonia in older people. In such a situation, these symptoms should not be ignored. If someone sees its symptoms, they should contact the doctor immediately.
Causes of double pneumonia:

Bacterial infection: Bacterial infection can cause pneumonia due to two types of bacteria. These include Streptococcus pneumonia and mycoplasma pneumonia. Mycoplasma pneumonia, also known as “walking pneumonia”, causes mild but long lasting pneumonia.
Viral infection: Influenza virus and rhinovirus are considered to be the cause of double pneumonia. It can cause fever and flu. In addition, coronavirus (eg covid-19) can also cause double pneumonia.
Fungal infection: Fungal pneumonia is more common in people with weak immunity. Fungi such as histoplasma and Candida can also cause pneumonia.
Weak immune system: Elderly, children and people with serious diseases are more likely to infection. Apart from this, diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer can also increase the risk of pneumonia.
Smoking and pollution: Smoking weakens lungs, which increases the risk of infection. Breathing in air pollution puts more pressure on the lungs, which increases the risk of pneumonia.
