New Delhi, 12 April (IANS). A new study warns that adults who have respiratory disease (RSV-ARI) associated with respiratory coconut virus (RSV) are about 2.7 times higher than normal people.
RSV-ARI is a type of respiratory disease caused by Respiratory Cyrotheal Virus (RSV). This virus is very common and spreads rapidly. It mainly affects the lungs and windpipe.
The study was introduced at a conference in Austria of European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infections Diseases (ESCMID Global 2025).
It is based on data made on 5,289 patients over the age of 18 in Denmark between 2011 and 2022, which were RSV-ARI. They were compared to 15,867 ordinary people and monitored for a year.
The lead researcher of the study Maria Joao Fonseka said, “The most surprising thing in this study is that the condition of the patients remained worse than the normal even after the acute phase of the disease. It shows that the effect of RSV-ARI can remain not only immediately but for a long time.”
Till now it was believed that RSV has an impact only on young children, but it can also become a serious problem in adults. It can further increase lung infection (pneumonia) and chronic respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma (asthma). Due to which they may need to be hospitalized in a hospital or ICU.
Fonseka said, “The deterioration of COPD and asthma symptoms was the most common problem. These diseases are already difficult and RSV-ARI makes their condition worse.” He also said that this also increases the cost of treatment.
He suggested that people who already have diseases like asthma or COPD should pay special attention to the treatment and care so that there is no serious condition further.
