Delay in treatment of knee arthritis causes damage to spinal cord: Health expert

इन्फ्लेमेशन का कारण बन सकती हैं डायबिटीज, हृदय रोग और मोटापा जैसी बीमरियां

New Delhi, October 12 (IANS). Failure to detect knee arthritis in time, ignoring its symptoms and delaying proper treatment can worsen the condition of your knees. It can even damage your spinal cord. Health experts said this on Saturday on the occasion of World Arthritis Day. According to him, if this problem is not treated on time, it can affect the quality of your life.

Arthritis of the knee, specifically osteoarthritis, is a degenerative joint disease that primarily affects adults. This causes pain, stiffness in the knees and loss of your mobility. Due to this you often face problems in everyday activities.

However, according to experts, the consequences of not getting timely treatment of knee arthritis or lack of maintenance can go beyond the problems of the knee joints.

Dr. L. of Max Super Specialty Hospital, Patparganj, Delhi. Tomar said that the most common cause of knee arthritis is osteoarthritis in more than 70 percent of the cases.

Due to osteoarthritis, the knee joint compartment cartilage gradually gets affected due to which the space between the two bones of the knee reduces.

Dr. Tomar further said that due to severe knee arthritis, some spinal problems are often seen in patients, because when patients continue to walk with arched feet, it puts more pressure on the spinal cord. , which causes harm to him. In such cases, the problem can be resolved by total knee replacement with minimal surgery.

In osteoarthritis, many osteophytes form around the joints, leading to a gradual loss of knee movement. Patients with late stage knee arthritis often have permanent deformity and their mobility remains extremely limited.

According to Dr. Praveen Gupta of Fortis Hospital, many problems related to the nervous system can be the result of arthritis.

For example, inflammatory arthritis can cause nerve compression syndrome, resulting in pain and numbness. Yet, these interrelationships are often overlooked, primarily due to lack of knowledge and training in the area.
