Demand for lab-grown meat increasing in Asia-Pacific region: Report

New Delhi, December 30 (IANS). According to a report on Monday, people’s interest in lab-grown meat is increasing rapidly in the Asia-Pacific region.

Meat is a major source of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and vitamins, which meet the body’s energy requirements. But traditional animal husbandry techniques are proving unable to meet the increasing demand. In this situation, lab-grown meat has emerged as an effective protein alternative.

According to a report by Global Data, countries in Asia-Pacific are exploring opportunities in lab meat production due to technological advancements and increasing awareness of sustainable methods.

Traditional animal husbandry practices lead to environmental problems, such as greenhouse gas emissions, water scarcity and overuse of land.

Baingari Susmita, consumer analyst at Global Data, said about three-quarters of agricultural land is used for animal husbandry, leaving little space for grain cultivation. Additionally, meat production is a major cause of greenhouse gases from the food industry. At the same time, lab-grown meat is sustainable and has less impact on the environment.

The report also noted changes in consumer preferences. According to Susmita, people are turning to alternative protein sources, increasing acceptance of lab-grown meat.

Singapore has been considered the best example of this. Singapore sees an opportunity to position itself as a global leader by adopting these new types of foods.

Global Data’s survey found that 81% of consumers in Asia and Australia consider the eco-friendliness of food and beverages when purchasing them.

Susmita said lab-grown meat reduces greenhouse gas emissions, promotes ethical behavior towards animals and meets the growing demand for high-protein food.

The report said that investment and laws in this technology will be promoted to achieve the goals of food security and sustainability in the Asia-Pacific region. This will boost competition and scientific innovation in the field.
