Development of health infrastructure under PM Modi's leadership: Amit Shah

Nagpur, 26 May (IANS). Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday attended the Bhoomipujan of ‘Swasti Niwas’ at ‘National Cancer Institute’ located in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He claimed that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, health infrastructure has developed in the country.

Amit Shah said, “Cancer was considered an incurable disease until a few years ago. But, in the last 15 years, many good cancer institutions opened in the country, which helped to make cancer treatment accessible.”

Praising the National Cancer Institute in Nagpur, he said, “The National Cancer Institute will benefit the poor people of Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra and they will get the best treatment here.”

The Union Home Minister appreciated the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that in the last 10 years, the government has made a lot of change in the health scenario in the country. 40 years ago, if a poor person was suffering from serious illness, he did not want to go for treatment, because treatment was expensive. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given free treatment up to five lakh rupees for 60 percent of the poor population and with the help of the state government, treatment up to Rs 25 lakh is free, which has strengthened 60 percent of the poor population.

Shah said, “As of 2014 there were seven AIIMS in the country, while 23 AIIMS have been approved in the last 11 years. In addition, till 2014 there were 387 government medical colleges across the country, whose number has increased to 780 today. Similarly, the number of MBBS seats which was 51,000 by 2014, has now increased to one lakh 18 thousand, while PG seats have increased from 31,000 to 74,000.”

Amit Shah targeted the opposition Congress, referring to the achievements of the central government. He said, “These Congress people say anything, this is their culture. And when I say something, they feel very bad. But, I want to tell them again that the health budget of the then Congress government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was Rs 37,000 crore in 2013-14, but in 2025-26, PM Modi passed the health budget of one lakh, 35 thousand crore rupees in Parliament.

He said, “The development of health infrastructure in the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is more than the then Congress government.”

Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis while addressing the program said, “When the National Cancer Institute was inaugurated in 2023, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah was to come. But he could not come for some reasons. At that time he promised that he would definitely come to the program next time and today he has come for the Bhoomipujan of ‘Swasti Niwas’.”

He said, “The treatment of cancer lasts for a long period, in such a situation, the families of the patients have a lot of difficulties in staying in big cities. I have come to the National Cancer Institute many times first and every time I have seen many families sleeping on the lawn, then it was very sad. The families of the cancer victims could get the facility to stay near the hospital during the treatment period, this ‘self -residence’ is being made in the future. Will also be developed as. “
