सर्दियों में भी हो सकती है पाचन संबंधी समस्याएं : एक्‍सपर्ट

New Delhi, January 12 (IANS). In the season of centuries, many types of diseases surround a person. These also include gastrointestinal related diseases. Diseases related to the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) have a direct impact on digestion.

To know more about diseases related to the gastrointestinal tract, which occur especially during the winter season, IANS spoke to Dr. Sukhwinder Singh Saggu, Director, Minimal Access, GI and Bariatric Surgery, CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi.

On how to prevent common GI infections in winter, the doctor said, “We see an increase in cases of gastrointestinal (GI) infections during winter. It is often caused by viruses, bacteria and parasites that thrive in cold conditions. Among the most common is viral gastroenteritis or stomach flu, often caused by norovirus and rotavirus. These infections spread easily through contaminated food, water or surfaces.

Talking about its symptoms, Dr. Sukhwinder Singh Saggu said, “Symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps are seen in the patient.” Bacterial infections like salmonella or E. coli can also be caused by consuming spoiled food. Infections like giardiasis can be caused by consuming dirty water.

Talking about the measures to prevent it, Dr. Sukhwinder said, “To prevent these infections, it is necessary to maintain proper hygiene. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating. Also, take special care of this even after using the toilet. Along with this, this virus can be avoided by cleaning frequently touched surfaces.

He further said, “While cooking food, keep in mind that special attention should be paid to cleanliness. Store perishable items at appropriate temperatures. Take filtered water to avoid water-borne diseases. If you do not have this facility, you can also use boiling water.

He informed that a strong immune system can help prevent GI infections. Include a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and probiotics to maintain gut health. To maintain a good immune system, it is very important to stay hydrated and get enough sleep.

The doctor further said, “Avoid close contact with infected persons and avoid sharing personal items like utensils or towels.” Pay attention to hydration to avoid infection and consult a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen. With awareness and some necessary measures, the risk of GI infections during winter can be reduced to a great extent, thereby keeping yourself away from these diseases in this cold season.
