Do not ignore the problem of jaundice in newborns

नवजात शिशुओं में पीलिया की समस्या को न करें नजरअंदाज

New Delhi, September 9 (IANS). You must have often seen that the problem of jaundice is seen in newborn babies. Sometimes it occurs a few months after birth or sometimes it occurs right from birth. It is believed that this type of problem occurs when the liver is not fully developed.

Today we will talk about why this problem is seen in infants? Its symptoms start appearing in many children right after birth. In such a situation, the color of the skin of children becomes yellow. Although jaundice can occur in people of all ages, but when it comes to infants, it is considered a common thing. It is said that in most cases it gets cured on its own.

Regarding this, IANS spoke to Dr. Urvansh Mehta, Consulting Physician at MD Medicine.

He said, jaundice in small children often develops due to breastfeeding. This is mostly seen on the first day of birth. In such cases, children need treatment in which we give phototherapy.

Talking about prevention, a woman should take special care of her health during pregnancy.

Dr. Urvansh further said that although jaundice gradually gets cured on its own, I would advise that it should not be ignored at all. Get your children treated soon, because it can be treated well with time.

According to Dr. Mehta, ignoring the problem and moving on is not the solution. Many times this problem of children is ignored, due to which children are brought to many hospitals with medical emergency.

In such a situation, it becomes difficult to save the children, hence never ignore your child’s jaundice.

Doctors say that bilirubin is the cause of jaundice. Jaundice in newborns is caused by the accumulation of bilirubin. Some newborns have a very high number of red cells at birth which keep changing frequently, due to which the child’s liver does not develop properly, causing jaundice. It is believed that it takes at least two weeks for the liver of children to develop.

When the child is two weeks old, the liver starts developing little by little. Although this problem does not require treatment in most cases, it gets cured on its own within 10 to 15 days, but sometimes in many children it can last for more than 15 days, after which they need treatment.

Reports suggest that only about one in 20 newborns require treatment for jaundice. High bilirubin levels at birth can cause brain damage known as kernicterus.

If we talk about its symptoms, then at the time of birth, the urine of the child appears dark yellow in colour, whereas if we talk about the stool of the child, then it is also light yellow in colour. These symptoms usually appear within 2 to 3 days of birth.

A study has revealed that it is mostly found in children who are born prematurely or in children whose blood does not match with their mother.
