New Delhi, November 30 (IANS). Often you must have seen and heard that whenever we have hiccups, the person next to us immediately starts saying, “Hey man, someone must be missing you?” And we innocent people accept their words as truth and start racking our brains wondering who is that person who is remembering us so much. Is this really what happens or is there some other reason for it?
As soon as ‘hiccups’ occur, we start making a list in our mind of relatives, friends and well-wishers, but if this does not help, then we drink water so that we can somehow get rid of the hiccups. However, Hiccup has nothing to do with anyone’s memory. There have been arguments in science as to why hiccups occur.
According to scientists, hiccups are related to our breathing. According to health experts, when there is any problem in our digestion or respiratory system, we start having hiccups. Hiccups are often nothing more than a short-term bothersome condition. If you eat or drink too fast, hiccups may occur suddenly. This is a repeated spasm of your diaphragm, accompanied by a ‘hick’ sound as your vocal cords close.
The cause of hiccups is unknown and there is no obvious reason for it. There are a few main reasons why some people suffer from hiccups from time to time, especially those that put pressure on the diaphragm. Some of the main reasons for this are fast eating, hot or spicy food, indigestion, excessive consumption of alcohol, fizzy drinks, cigarette smoking, stress, bad smell and pregnancy.
Now this question must be arising in your mind that why did the elders of our house say this? Let us tell you that people used to say this because by doing this our attention gets distracted and the hiccups stop. In fact, when you put pressure on your mind, your mind moves away from hiccups and goes to the other side.
