The risk of heart attack increases due to contraceptive pill
In today’s modern lifestyle, women are using birth control pills quite common. These pills are considered an effective way to avoid unwanted pregnancy, but a recently published study has expressed concern that consuming these pills for a long time may increase the risk of stroke and heart attack in women. In such a situation, Senior Consultant at Asian Hospital – Interventional Cardiology Dr. Prateek Chaudhary is telling whether all women are threatened by contraceptive pills?
Birth control pills and their effects:
Contraceptive pills mainly contain two types of hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones prevent pregnancies by interfering in the body’s natural process. However, this change in hormone levels can affect the body’s blood vessels and the tendency to freeze blood. Especially when the amount of estrogen is high, the chances of blood clots are increased, causing stroke (which is caused by stopping blood supply in the brain) and myocardial infarction.
What was found in the new study?
A recent international research has seen that women who have been using hormonal contraceptive pills for a long time, especially those that have high estrogen doses, may have a risk of heart attack and ischemic stroke in them, especially if they already have any risk factor such as high BP, diabetes, or smoking.
It was also observed that this risk has been found to be low in the new generation pills, which have low hormone content, but have not completely finished.
Which women are more at risk?
Smoking women: Especially women above 35 years of age who smoke and are taking contraceptive pills increase the risk of cardiovascular phenomena manifold.
High blood pressure or high cholesterol: This combination can be dangerous for women who already have hypertension or high cholesterol problems.
Family History: If someone in the family has a history of stroke or heart attack, the risk becomes even higher.
Migraine: The risk of stroke increases in women with migraine.
Are all women a threat from birth control pills?
No, it is not so. Pregnancy pills are usually considered safe for healthy, young, and low -risk women. But it is necessary that every woman should choose the contraceptive only after consulting her doctor and get her health status evaluated.
What is a doctor’s advice?
As a professional cardiologist I suggest that if a woman has been using birth control pills for a long time, she should take special care of the following things:
Get regular blood pressure checked.
Keep lifestyle healthy, yoga, exercise and balanced diet is necessary.
Do not smoke.
If there is migraine, BP, diabetes or family history, then definitely tell the doctor.
Consider low hormone dose or non-hormonal options.
