Eli Lilly and Company launched its weight loss drug Maunjaro in India on Thursday after approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO). It is a drug that activates GIP (glucose-deepent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) hormone receptors that help control obesity, overweight and type 2 diabetes.

According to the company, the injection has to be taken every week. The price of a bottle of 2.5 mg will be Rs 3500 and a 5 mg vial will cost Rs 4375. This means that the monthly price of injection will be between Rs 14000 and Rs 17500. This pricing is only applicable in India because the price of silence in America is about 1000–1200 dollars per month, which is about 86000 to 1 lakh rupees. American drug pharma company Eli Lily & Company claims that Maunzaro, also known as Tirzepetide, mimic the action of two natural hormones in the body; Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) and Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). These hormones help control blood sugar levels and appetite.
Taking it as an injection once a week activates GLP-1 and GIP receptors in the body, which helps in weight loss. It slows down the process of gastric emptying, reduces appetite and increases the feeling of stomach up. Also reduces glucose production in the liver, which improves insulin sensitivity.
