New Delhi, December 31 (IANS). The Union Health Ministry made a big disclosure on Tuesday. Told that medicines worth Rs 6.6 crore have been seized in Kolkata. Which also includes drugs to treat cancer and diabetes. One person has also been arrested in this case.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, a joint investigation was conducted by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and the Directorate of Drug Control at a bulk complex in West Bengal.
The ministry said, “In the raid conducted at Kolkata-based M/s Care and Cure for You, a large quantity of medicines used in the treatment of cancer, diabetes and other diseases were seized. These are suspected to be counterfeit.
These medicines are labeled by various countries including Ireland, Türkiye, America and Bangladesh. No supporting documents have been found to prove their legitimate import into India.
“In the absence of such documents, these medicines are considered to be counterfeit. The investigation team also found several empty packing materials, raising concerns over the authenticity of the seized products,” the ministry said.
The total market value of the seized drugs is estimated to be around Rs 6.60 crore.
Samples of the medicines have been sent for testing to ensure proper investigation. The remaining seized quantity is being kept safe by CDSCO.
According to the ministry, after investigation, the accused woman, who has been identified as the owner of the wholesaler company, was arrested. He was detained by the drug inspector of the Eastern Zone of CDSCO.
The court has sent the accused to judicial custody for 14 days and allowed further interrogation. Further investigation is ongoing in this matter.
The ministry said that the action taken against counterfeit medicines underlines the government’s policy of zero tolerance towards the circulation of fake and substandard medicines in the market.
