The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned that some popular allergic drugs, which people take for a long time, may cause a very sharp and unbearable itching if they are suddenly closed. Even though it is in very few cases, this problem can be very bothering and can be required.
According to the news agency Xinhua, the FDA reported that those who have been taking these medicines for many months or years continuously for many months or years can have serious itching (called pruritus in medical language) after closing these drugs for several months or years.
Both these medicines are also available in the market without a doctor’s slip and on the advice of a doctor. The FDA has now added the mention of this serious itching by changing the information of these drugs. The FDA stated that it has revised the prescription information for both drugs to incorporate warnings about possible effects.
The FDA has also said that they will soon ask the drug -making companies that this warning should also be added to the drug facts of OTC medicines.
Sergeons and levoseturizine are given for the treatment of allergies. They prevent a chemical histamin in the body at the time of allergies. These drugs are approved for the treatment of sneezing and nasal flowing in children and elders of two years and older in seasonal allergies (allergic rhinitis). Apart from this, these drugs have also been given to treat year -round allergies. This includes allergies such as perennial allergic rhinitis, chronic hives.
Sergeen first was first approved on a doctor’s slip (prescription drug) Zirtech in December 1995 and was allowed to sell it as OTC medicine in November 2007. Levosetirijine was approved in May 2007 on a doctor’s slip named Jayajal and in January 2017 as OTC.
