New Delhi, Sep 8 (IANS) The central government on Sunday said that a young man has tested positive for monkeypox. The patient has been kept in isolation at a hospital. This is the first suspected case of monkeypox in the country.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in a statement that the young man who has been found to have symptoms of ampox had recently returned from a visit to an infection-affected country.
The ministry said, “The patient has been isolated in a designated hospital and is currently in stable condition.” However, the ministry has not disclosed which country the young man had visited. Also, which state he is from has also not been disclosed.
The statement said that samples of the patient are being tested to confirm the presence of ampox. The case is being managed as per the laid down protocol. Apart from this, people who came in contact with the patient are being traced to identify possible sources and assess the impact within the country.
The Health Ministry has said that the government is on alert regarding the ‘Mpox’ and people coming to India from other countries are being monitored. Strong measures have been taken to manage and mitigate any potential risk.
In 2022, there was a global outbreak of ampox, affecting many countries including India.
Ampox is a viral disease that causes fever, headache and muscle aches, as well as painful blisters on the skin. It spreads from person to person through touch. Since the beginning of this year, 5,549 cases of ampox have been confirmed across the African continent, and 643 people have died.
The Health Ministry has said that there is no reason to worry and the country is fully prepared to deal with such isolated cases.
