Mumbai, 8 February (IANS). The number of suspected Gilian Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases in Maharashtra on Friday increased to 180. These include a 64 -year -old woman from Mumbai, who have had a rare nerve disease.
The woman, who lives in Andheri East, had earlier complained of fever and diarrhea, after which her body gradually started getting paralysis. Four new suspected GBS cases were reported in the state on Friday.
So far, GBS has been confirmed to 146 out of 180 patients. There have been a total of six deaths so far due to this disease, one of which has been confirmed by GBS, while the remaining five are suspicious.
According to the state’s public health department, 35 of 180 patients are from Pune Municipal Corporation area, 88 recently connected villages, 25 Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, 24 Pune Rural and Eight Other districts.
Of these, 79 patients have been discharged from the hospital so far, 58 are admitted in ICU and 22 are on ventilator.
Maharashtra’s Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar has appealed to the people to be vigilant rather than nervous. He said that keep the quality of water and eat fresh and clean food.
He informed that Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda has asked the state government to prepare a standard operation process for the management of GBS. He has directed the state’s health, urban development and other departments to take steps to prevent the disease.
The state government has been asked to provide free treatment to the patients as per the central government guidelines. Abitkar informed that GBS patients are being treated free of cost in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation hospitals. Apart from this, this treatment is also being covered under the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana of the state.
