Frailty increases the risk of dementia: Research

Sydney, November 12 (IANS). Australian researchers have said on the basis of a research that a physically weak person has a higher risk of suffering from dementia.

According to the report of Xinhua news agency, this study published by the University of Queensland collected and studied data of 29,849 people aged 60 years and above in the United States and Britain between 1997 and 2024. Of these, 3,154 people developed dementia.

Research found a link between frailty and dementia. Frailty is an aging-related health condition in which organs lose their flexibility, increasing a person’s risk of falls, disability, and hospitalization.

David Ward, lead author of the research conducted by the University’s Health Services Research Centre, said that when 3,154 people were studied, it was found that these people had become physically weak nine years before becoming victims of dementia.

“By understanding the relationship between aging, frailty and dementia, we can use targeted intervention strategies to reduce risk and improve quality of life,” he said.

Dementia, a term for a number of diseases that affect memory, thinking and behavior, affects more than 55 million people globally, according to the World Health Organization.
