Doctors of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Odisha have performed miracles. Doctors have restored the heartbeat of a man who had almost died. Actually, Shubhkant Sahu of Nayagarh district was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar on October 1. Complaining of difficulty in breathing since 24 hours, Shubhkant’s family members kept visiting different hospitals from 12 o’clock in the night till 5 in the morning. Despite this nothing happened anywhere.
CPR given for 40 minutes
At 7 am on October 1, he was admitted to AIIMS Hospital in an unconscious condition. According to doctors, when Shubhakant was undergoing treatment, his heartbeat stopped at around 10 o’clock. Even after giving CPR for 40 minutes, Shubhkant’s heart did not start beating.
Doctors were left with only two options
During this time the doctors were left with only 2 options. The first thing is that either Shubhkant should be declared dead or he should be put on ECMO and tried again. In this procedure, a device is implanted in the patient’s body, which works like a heart and pumps blood.

This machine pumps blood into the lungs, heart and veins. At around 11 am, 80 minutes after the heart stopped beating, doctors put the patient on ECMO and resumed treatment. After 40 minutes of treatment by putting him on ECMO, a miracle happened. The heartbeats of ‘dead’ Shubhakant started beating again. Shubhkant’s breathing returned.
Heartbeat returned to normal after 30 hours
After 30 hours of treatment on ECMO, the heartbeat returned to normal. After 96 hours of ECMO, Shubhkant was put on ventilator. After being kept on ventilator for 2 weeks, the patient regained consciousness and opened his eyes.
First case in Odisha
Shubhakant, who just returned after dodging death, is fine and is smiling again. Such miracles or should we say cures are rarely seen across the country. This is the first case in Odisha and eastern part of India, when something like this has been seen.

Shubhakant has thanked the doctors after coming back from the jaws of death. Doctors have also called it a miracle. With Shubhakant regaining consciousness, a wave of happiness has spread from the hospital to his district Nayagarh.
