High-intensity physical workout is more beneficial for women: Research

New Delhi, October 28 (IANS). Are you exercising to lose weight? A research has revealed that high-intensity physical workouts can be more beneficial for women.

The study, published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society, showed that engaging in moderate to vigorous exercise, such as vigorous physical activities such as jumping rope, swimming and cycling, can reduce appetite levels in healthy adults.

A small-scale study found that women may be more sensitive to this reaction.

Researchers at the University of Virginia in the US showed that this effect was caused by a hormone called ghrelin, which increases appetite. They found that hunger levels were significantly reduced after high-intensity physical workouts compared to moderate-intensity exercise.

Lead author Cara Anderson of the university found that people felt significantly less hungry after high-intensity physical workouts than after moderate-intensity exercise.

The study involved eight men and six women to examine the effect of exercise intensity and sex on ghrelin levels and appetite in people. The participants fasted overnight and then completed exercises of varying intensity levels. This was determined by measurement of blood lactate and subsequent self-reported measurements of hunger.

The results showed that women had higher total ghrelin levels than men. However, only women had “significantly less acylated ghrelin” after high-intensity physical workout. The findings revealed that AG and deacylated ghrelin (DAG) are two forms of the hormone ghrelin.

Research has shown that in addition to appetite, ghrelin also impacts energy balance, appetite, glucose homeostasis, immune function, sleep, and memory.

Anderson explained that exercise can be compared to a drug whose ‘dosage’ should be decided based on the individual’s personal goals

While studies show that high-intensity physical workouts can suppress appetite and aid weight loss. More research is needed to confirm the results of this research.
