New Delhi, June 24 (IANS) Australian researchers have discovered a special honey, which indigenous makes bees without sting. This honey is different from common honey, because it has properties that can help kill bacteria.
This honey among the locals is called ‘Sugarbag Honey’. According to the report by the news agency Xinhua, the honey found in three species like Austroplabia Australis has elements that have the strength to kill bacteria, which can make it a better option for antibiotics.
Researchers at the University of Sydney saw that even after heating this honey, there is a strength to kill bacteria in it. Also, when honey is kept for a long time, it does not lose its special qualities.
This specialty makes this honey different from the honey of European bees. Antibiotic property of European bees honey depends mostly on hydrogen peroxide, which can weaken over heat or time.
The study has shown that the strength of killing germs of honey without stingless bees works two ways, hydrogen peroxide and non-hydrogen peroxide.
Kenya Fernandes, the main writer of the study, said that the strength of germs of this honey has been found almost the same everywhere. Plants are not only responsible for this strength, but bees themselves play the main role in it.
Professor D Carter of Sydney University said, “Sugarbag honey works almost the same everywhere and all the time, but the honey of the common bee has different effects with the weather and change of flowers.”
The study in Applied and Environmental Microbiology published by the American Society for Microbiology states that this honey has traditionally been used by local people of Australia for eating and treatment. It is now considered a natural and effective option instead of synthetic antibiotics.
Each stingless bee hive makes only half a liter of honey a year, but they can be produced on a large scale.
