According to Onlymyhealth, spices were considered responsible for gastric ulcers and acidity. However, in the mid-20th century, it was proven that spices do not cause ulcers. In fact, according to a study published in the ‘World Journal of Gastroenterology’, consumption of some common spices in food and intake of herbal supplements may help fight peptic ulcer disease in humans. But this does not mean that eating masala or spicy food does not have a negative impact on gut health. Spicy food may trigger or worsen symptoms of acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in some individuals. Spices can relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), allowing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus, resulting in heartburn or heartburn.

Spices, especially in excessive amounts, can directly irritate the stomach lining, causing a burning or uncomfortable sensation. There is a risk of indigestion, ulcers, upper abdominal discomfort, reflux symptoms. So spices will definitely make it worse. According to the doctor, chili and capsaicin have the most effects among spices. There are also other spices that can be neutral to these effects. If someone has heartburn or chest discomfort, it is called retrosternal burn or reflux disease. Immediate relief can be obtained by taking some neutral substances like cold milk, antacids, chewable antacid tablets or Digene syrup.
