New Delhi, Sep 16 (IANS) We need 7 to 8 hours of sleep for our body to stay healthy. If you are sleeping more than your 8 hours of sleep then it can be a danger signal for you.

If you feel sleepy even after sleeping for 8 hours, then you may have a disease called ‘hypersomnia’. ‘Hypersomnia’ is a type of sleep disorder. A person suffering from this disorder feels sleepy throughout the day despite getting enough sleep. Despite getting enough sleep at night, he develops the habit of taking naps again and again.

Symptoms of ‘hypersomnia’ include excessive daytime sleepiness. This problem can be a primary or secondary condition. Primary hypersomnia can be caused by neurological reasons. On the other hand, secondary hypersomnia can be caused by another medical condition, such as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea causes difficulty breathing at night, which causes a person to wake up frequently and not be able to sleep properly. Additionally, this disease can also be caused by the intake of certain medications. Frequent consumption of alcohol or drugs can also cause daytime sleepiness. Other possible causes include decreased thyroid function or head injury.

Dr. Amit Kumar, head of ‘Shatayu Ayurveda and Panchkarma Center’ in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, says that people who sleep too much during the day are at the highest risk of hypersomnia. This includes things like sleep apnea, kidney, heart, brain conditions, depression and low thyroid. This disease is more likely to occur in women than in men. Also, people who are addicted to alcohol and smoking are also at risk of hypersomnia.

Dr. Amit further says that a person suffering from hypersomnia can take a nap anytime during the day. Many times he also faces difficulty in waking up from long sleep. Apart from this, that person feels tired all the time, due to which the concentration and energy of that person also decreases significantly. To avoid this, it is very important for people to take proper medical advice.

Talking about its treatment, Dr. Amit says, “It is better if doctors treat it. Many times people try to treat it by becoming doctors themselves by studying online, which is the biggest mistake people make. Due to this, the disease of such a person keeps increasing instead of reducing and takes a terrible form.”

He further says that while treating this disease, the doctor first maintains a sleep diary of such a patient. The doctor keeps a record of how many hours a person is sleeping in 24 hours. Apart from this, at what time he sleeps and at what time he wakes up. Apart from this, this disease is diagnosed and treated through many other tests.
