Researchers at IIT Ropar have found a solution to make ‘continuous passive motion’ (CPM) therapy more accessible and affordable. For this, ‘Mechanical Passive Motion Machine’ has been developed. This machine is very helpful in knee rehabilitation. This new technology has also been patented.
The conventional electric motor driven machines already available in this sector are quite expensive. Generally, treatment is given in the hospital with conventional machines. Whereas, with the new machine, patients can avail these benefits at their own home. This machine developed by IIT is different from the earlier machines and completely mechanical. It uses a piston and pulley system that stores air as the user pulls the handle, allowing smooth and controlled movement to aid in knee rehabilitation.
This simple device is both lightweight and portable. Due to its effective design, it does not require any electricity, battery or motor. The mechanical CPM machine developed by IIT is a new alternative to expensive electric machines. Expensive machines are still out of reach for many patients. This is a promising option for such patients. Especially in rural areas where electricity supply is not continuous.
