New Delhi, 30 June (IANS). American researchers have developed a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool that can detect nine types of dementia by scanning a brain just once. This achievement is an important step in the early identity of neurodygenettive diseases.
This tool, called ‘Statewills’, not only identifies dementia quickly, but also gives accurate diagnosis in 88 percent of cases, including Alzheimer’s disease.
According to research published in the magazine ‘Neurology’, this tool helps doctors to explain the brain scan with twice as fast and three times more accuracy than the normal process.
Researchers at Mayo Clinic tested 3,600 scan results of patients who are not suffering from any such problem through the AI Tool.
Dementia is difficult to diagnose because it needs a variety of tests, such as cognitive tests, blood tests, imaging, clinical interviews. It is challenging to identify diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Levy Body Dementia, and Frontotemporal dementia differently, as their symptoms sometimes resemble.
Dr. David Jones, a neurologist at Mayo Clinic, says that every patient who comes to his clinic brings a unique story made with the complexity of his mind. That is, every person’s symptoms and causes may be different.
He explained the tool called ‘State Viewer’, which is part of the Mayo Clinic’s Neurology Artificial Intelligence Program. This tool helps to make the treatment of dementia easier and accurate. The state viewer analyzes the scan, which reflects the use of glucose by the brain and by mixing it from the database of dementia’s pucca matters, finds out which dementia is the patient (eg Alzheimer’s, Levy Body, or Frontotemporal), which makes doctors easier to understand problems.
Dr. Jones says that statewills are an important step towards changing the attitude of diseases like dementia in future with quick and accurate treatment.
Diseases such as Alzheimer’s, levy body dementia and frontotemporal dementia affect different parts of the brain. Alzheimer’s damages memory and thinking parts. Levi body dementia affects the parts associated with meditation and moving. The frontotemporal changes the parts responsible for the dementia language and behavior.
The tool called State Viewer shows these patterns through color coded brain maps, which highlights the main areas of brain activities. It helps doctors, especially those who are not neurology experts, help to understand what AI saw and how it works with diagnosis.
More than 55 million people worldwide are affected by dementia and about 1 crore new cases come up every year. Alzheimer’s, which is the most common type, is now the fifth biggest cause of death in the world.
