Khartum, 31 May (IANS). In Sudan, especially in the capital Khartum, there is an increase in the cases of cholera. Meanwhile, Sudani Health Ministry has announced that it has received more than 29 lakh doses of cholera vaccine.
Cholera is a serious disease that spreads by dirty water or stale food. This can lead to lack of diarrhea and water. It can also be fatal if there is no treatment.
In a statement on Friday, Sudan’s Health Ministry said, “A total of 29,05,400 vaccines have been obtained to deal with the cholera epidemic. The vaccine has been brought to prevent the infection especially in Khartum.”
The government said that this vaccine has been donated by an organization called International Coordination Group (ICG). The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have also helped in this work.
The statement said that these vaccines will be sent to the Khartum state, where a big vaccination campaign will be started soon. All people of the age of one year or older will be vaccinated.
According to the ministry, since October 2023, Sudan has received more than 1.69 crore vaccine doses through the partnership of health agencies and ICG.
Earlier this week, Sudan Health Minister Hatham Mohammad Ibrahim said that the number of patients infected with cholera in Khartum has increased. In May itself, at least 2,500 people have suffered from cholera in Khartum.
On Tuesday, the ministry said that there were cases of 2,729 new infections in a week and 172 people lost their lives due to the disease.
According to the non-governmental medical support group doctors without borders, electricity and water services are being closed repeatedly in the Khartum state. When electricity and clean water are not available, people are forced to use dirty water, which spreads an epidemic like cholera.
