New Delhi, 21 May (IANS). A team of scientists of the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), working under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, have discovered some new drugs to treat serious brain related diseases. These diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson, are growing rapidly worldwide and finding their treatment remains a big challenge.
This research has been published in a journal called ‘Drug Discovery Today’. Scientists have stated that special types of drugs called peptidometics can be effective in treating these diseases. These drugs help in growth and protecting neurons. Peptidomimatics drugs are artificially made and they act like natural proteins present in the body. These drugs are more durable and can reach the brain easily. This keeps the ability to affect them for a long time.
Till now neurotrophins that were used to treat these diseases used to deteriorate quickly and could not function properly in the body. Therefore, scientists have created artificial compounds that work like these natural proteins but are more effective and safe. Professor Ashish K. This research conducted under the leadership of Mukherjee also states that peptidomimatics drugs can be designed in such a way that they only affect the place where needed. This also reduces the chances of side effects of the drug.
Professor Ashish K. Mukherjee further stated that a major advantage of peptidomimatics is that they are more stable and easily available than neurotrophin formed in our body. This means that they can be transported to the brain in a more effective way and they are able to do their work for a long time.
Researchers also reported that these drugs can also be used in other diseases such as cancer, and new medicines can be made based on them in future. This research is expected that in the coming time, peptidomimatics medicines will be a new hope in the treatment of serious brain diseases.
