New Delhi, May 10 (IANS). The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday that India is seeing a steady decline in maternal and infant mortality towards achieving the targets of 2030 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations.
Citing the recently launched ‘Sample Registration System (SRS) Report 2021’, the Recently launched by the General Registrar of India (RGI), the Ministry said that there has been a decrease in the death rate (U5 MR) of children under the age of maternal mortality (MMR), infant mortality (IMR), newborn mortality (NMR) and children under five.
The ministry said, “India’s progress in reducing maternal and infant mortality indicators is higher than the global average.”
It said, “These continuous improvements are the result of strategic intervention and the government’s unwavering commitment.”
While MMR declined 130 to 37 points to 93 in 2014-16 to 93 in 2019-21, IMR declined from 39 to 1000 births per 1000 births in 2014 to 27 per 1000 births in 2021.
There was a significant decline in infant mortality. In 2014, where there was 26 per 1000 births, in 2021, in 2021, it increased to 19 per 1000. At the same time, the U5 MR decreased from 45 to 1000 births per 1000 births in 2014 to 31 on 1000 births in 2021. Remarkable, the sex ratio at birth was seen in 2014 from 899 to 2021 improvements from 913.
The total fertility rate is stable at 2.0 in 2021, which is a significant improvement from 2.3 in 2014. According to the SRS report, the number was 1.5 lakh in 2014.
In addition, it showed that eight states have already achieved the SDG target of MMR: Kerala (20), Maharashtra (38), Telangana (45), Andhra Pradesh (46), Tamil Nadu (49), Jharkhand (51), Gujarat (53), Karnataka (63).
Twelve states/union territories have already achieved the SDG target of U5 MR: Kerala (8), Delhi (14), Tamil Nadu (14), Jammu and Kashmir (16), Maharashtra (16), West Bengal (20), Karnataka (21), Punjab (22), Punjab (22), Telangana (22), Himachal Pradesh (23), Andhra Pradesh (24) and Gujarat (24).
Six states/union territories have already achieved the SDG target of NMR: Kerala (4), Delhi (8), Tamil Nadu (9), Maharashtra (11), Jammu and Kashmir (12) and Himachal Pradesh (12).
