New Delhi, November 22 (IANS). A research has revealed that metabolic and bariatric surgery is safe for patients with body mass index (BMI) more than 70.
When a person is unable to lose weight even after eating, drinking and exercising, then this surgery is done to reduce his weight. This surgery is mainly done in people with a BMI of 35 or more. People suffering from serious health problems due to weight need to undergo this surgery.
However, no value of BMI has been determined for those undergoing bariatric surgery. But it is believed that if the body mass index (BMI) of the patient is high then he may face many problems after surgery.
The research, led by a team from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in the US, analyzed data from 84 extremely obese patients who had undergone metabolic or bariatric surgery.
The findings, published in the journal Obesity Surgery, showed that surgery-based obesity treatment reduced the rate of complications 30 days after the operation.
“The number of people suffering from obesity is increasing rapidly and they require specialized care,” said Dr. Florina Corpodian, a postdoctoral researcher and surgical research fellow at Pennington Biomedical. These people may be considered at high risk due to their increased BMI, this surgery is mainly safe for these people suffering from obesity.
With obesity rates rising rapidly, doctors and health workers are now treating people with a BMI over 70. This surgery helps in reducing weight as well as treating metabolic problems related to obesity.
Researchers showed that severely obese patients lost weight after bariatric surgery. The important thing in this is that the patients did not face any problem even after one year of surgery.
